An entirely different type of Memorial Day observance and related activities will take place in Oscoda on Monday May 25th this year. There will be a Parade, which will begin at 10 AM sharp on Perimeter Road across from Air Force Beach/Ratliff Park. The Parade will proceed down Perimeter Road and end at the Veterans Memorial Park of Northeast Michigan at the corner of Skeel Road and Perimeter. There are abundant parking and viewing opportunities for the public along the entire route.
In addition to all the usual types of unique vehicles and floats, the Parade will include a number of classic military vehicles including an Army M35A2 cargo truck on which 10 local in-country veterans of WW II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom will be riding and honored. Staging of vehicles for the Parade is set for 9::30am on Perimeter Road, but participants are welcome to start staging vehicles prior to that time.
Following the Parade, at 11 AM sharp an outdoor Memorial Day Service will begin at the Circle of Flags. An Honor Guard will present the Colors, and the American Flag will be brought to full staff at the appropriate time. A requested flyover by U S Army Aircraft during the Event is now in the military approval process and is expected to occur.
As part of the activities we plan for all 55 United States and Territory Flags to be raised at one moment at the Circle of Flags. Following those activities, the official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Pentagon Service Monument will occur at the exact location where construction will begin.
Food and refreshments will be available at no charge (as supplies last) after the Groundbreaking Ceremony courtesy of the VFW Post 3735 and American Legion Post 274.
In addition to the Parade and all other activities on Monday, there will be a number of Classic Military Vehicles Parked and on Display on Elm Street at the Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday May 24th all day. The Park’s Visitors Center will be open Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Work continues on final details, parade participants, and other potential activities. General information about the Park, detailed information about the Pentagon Monument, and further information about the Memorial Day activities available on the Park's Website: www.vpmnem.org Questions or suggestions may also be directed to the Oscoda Chamber of Commerce www.oscodachamber.com phone 739-7322. Mrs. Smiths 3rd, 4th and 5th grade class at Glennie Elementary School spent Veteran’s Day Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 reading, writing and discussing the long history of Americans who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.
The students are genuinely thankful for our Veteran’s dedication and service, so that we may live the lives we have grown to know.

What began as dream that was born during the events and overwhelming community involvement associated
with the Vietnam Memorial The Moving Wall when it was on display in Oscoda at the former Wurtsmith Air Base
in June of 2005.
Organizers for the park project held their initial meeting on March 21, 2006.
Serveral names for the park were discussed and "Veterans Memorial Park of Northeast Michigan"
was choosen to reflect the regional nature of the planned Memorial.
Approved to establish this Park at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base was granted by the
Oscoda Township Board on August 14, 2006.
This Park will be approximately 6 acres in size and include the area known as
Constitution Park or the Circle of Flags. Click on the images to see location the area mark with a red line.
